Fudcon North America 2011 — bids opening!

Posted by admin

Paul W. Frields announced on Monday, April 5 at 21:31:46 UTC 2010," The Fedora Project holds a number of global FUDCon events each year. Typically the Community Architecture team's budget supports one of these large events each Red Hat fiscal quarter (with the fiscal year starting on March 1). This year we have the Latin American event, FUDCon Santiago in Chile, in Q2; the event for EMEA, FUDCon Zurich in Switzerland, in Q3; and a North American FUDCon event in Q4.

In each case, typically the event will happen sometime in the first two months of the quarter, so that we can ensure all bills are paid by Red Hat's financial deadlines. That deadline usually comes a couple weeks before the end of quarter, so the first two months are the ideal time to actually stage an event. So the North American FUDCon event will happen in either December 2010 or January 2011. The bidders will work with the Community Architecture team to resolve the exact timing.

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 updated

Posted by admin

The Debian project is pleased to announce the fourth update of its stable distribution Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 (codename "lenny"). This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustments for serious problems.

Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no need to throw away 5.0 CDs or DVDs but only to update via an up-to-date Debian mirror after an installation, to cause any out of date packages to be updated.

New cdbuilder server improves Debian infrastructure

Posted by admin

Today, the Debian project administrators are activating a new cdbuilder server. The server computes the official Debian ISO images once all software packages are ready for a new Debian release. While the old system needed 20 hours to build the ISOs, the new server needs less than two hours for the same job.

Debian users download ISO images and burn them on CD or DVD to create their Debian installation media. Building ISO images in a fast way is a critical task for every Debian release. Once all the packages are ready, everyone is waiting for the new ISO images to become available. With over 25.000 packages for twelve computer architectures this is a very challenging task. says Steve McIntyre, Debian Project Leader.

Canonical announces commercial services for its version control system, Bazaar

Set up, support and troubleshooting now available for new and existing deployments

LONDON, December 10, 2009 – Companies and open source projects interested in using Canonical's popular version control system now have access to a suite of commercial services – Consultancy & Conversion, Training and Support – allowing them to migrate, deploy and manage Bazaar.

Used by Ubuntu and thousands of other open source and commercial projects, Bazaar (bzr) is a version control system (vcs) that supports distributed development environments. Many existing version control systems use a centralised model, a particular challenge to globally distributed 'chase the sun' development teams, or environments where there is a frequent need to merge or branch code. Although bzr itself is open source, there is no requirement for commercial projects to make their code publicly available.
